Reflecting on what I have learned over the years, little did I know that one of my biggest teachers would be a sweet senior foster cat named Bugs, and the person who loved her most.
In early 2023, Bugs was seized by an animal shelter when her human of 16 years, Joseph, was suddenly hospitalised. Joseph had nobody who could care for dear Bugs.
Facing a long stay in hospital, Joseph's heart remained with his best friend. He organised for Bugs to be placed in a boarding facility until he could return home, but after three months, Joseph was still in recovery and Bugs was facing seizure by the shelter.
Faced with a heartbreaking decision, and knowing of Bugs' own extensive health issues including arthritis, Joseph could not bear to lose her.
That is when his support worker reached out to Pets Of The Homeless.
For the next eight months, on and off while Joseph bravely battled ongoing health issues, I was honoured to care for Bugs. Taking the friendly feline into my heart, home and office, her affectionate nature melted the hearts of everyone she met.
All the while, Joseph continued to love Bugs from afar when he could not be by her side. Their heartwarming reunions between hospital visits proved their special bond.
Sadly, just after Christmas 2023, we received news that Joseph had passed away. Holding little Bugs tight, I promised her that she would always be safe and loved (with me of course).
This kind man and his beloved cat taught me just how fragile life can be, and that we need to make the most of these precious little moments of togetherness.
They taught me the power of love and loyalty. And that the bond shared between a pet and their human is deeply profound, offering comfort and support during life's most trying moments.
